World energy consumption is still going up. The slow-down of energy consumption in the industrialized countries is not sufficient to compensate the accelerated growth in the developing countries. Today, this energy is covered mainly by coal, oil and natural gas (together 87%). Hydroelectric and nuclear energy provide 12%. Truly renewable energies provide less than 1%! It is our conviction that a gradual phase-over from non-renewable to renewable energy will only start once a cost competitive solution for solar energy can be found – hence Solar Islands!
